Pre-Registration Pharmacist Program
Objectives
- To support both local and foreign-trained pharmacy graduates in achieving professional registration with the Pharmacy Council of Zimbabwe.
- To provide structured guidance and preparatory resources for candidates required to pass Exam 1A (MCAZ), including those preparing while abroad.
- To help interns design a personalized, goal-oriented pre-registration year across diverse pharmacy sectors: hospital, manufacturing, academia, research, community pharmacy, or regulatory affairs.
- To connect interns with trusted placement partners in alignment with their career interests and development needs.
- To promote high standards of ethical practice, professionalism, and patient-centered care in all pharmacy settings.
- To encourage lifelong learning by supporting interns who wish to pursue further education, including postgraduate degrees locally or internationally.
Roles & Responsibilities
As a pre-registration pharmacist intern coordinated through IPERI, your roles and responsibilities will vary depending on your chosen sectors (or a rotation across them). You will gain broad exposure and develop competencies across the different pillars of pharmacy practice:
Hospital Pharmacy
- Provide clinical pharmacy services, including medication reviews and ward rounds under supervision
- Participate in patient counselling, discharge planning, and health promotion activities
- Manage and monitor drug supply chains within the hospital
- Assist in pharmacovigilance reporting and antimicrobial stewardship programs
Retail / Community Pharmacy
- Dispense prescription and over-the-counter medicines in line with legal and ethical standards
- Counsel patients on the proper use of medicines and promote healthy lifestyle choices
- Manage inventory, ordering, and stock rotation to ensure medicine availability
- Support public health initiatives such as vaccination drives or screening services
Manufacturing / Industrial Pharmacy
- Assist in production processes under GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) standards
- Support quality assurance and control activities, including documentation and batch release
- Participate in formulation development and stability studies where applicable
- Contribute to regulatory compliance and reporting
Academia & Research
- Support teaching and training activities under supervision (if placed in academia)
- Participate in ongoing research projects — from data collection to literature reviews and basic analysis
- Contribute to scientific writing or poster presentations
Regulatory Affairs / Policy
- Assist with dossier preparation, medicine registration documentation, or compliance reviews
- Contribute to the review of pharmacovigilance data
- Support advocacy or public health policy initiatives
Eligibility
Local Graduates: Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from a recognized university
Foreign Graduates: Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from a recognized international university (IPERI will assist in a must pass MCAZ Exam 1A before starting pre-reg)
Strong interest in pharmacy practice, ethics, and continuous learning
Good communication and teamwork skills

A: Yes, we can guide and connect you to local or international universities and programs aligned with your career goals.
Q: Will I receive mentorship during my pre-reg?
A: Yes. We ensure interns are placed under qualified supervisors and provide additional mentorship support through IPERI.

- For foreign graduates: Enroll in Exam 1A prep support (remote/online)
- On passing Exam 1A, plan your pre-reg sectors with IPERI guidance
- Receive placement recommendations / connect with partner institutions
- Start pre-registration training under supervision
